![]() Hermes also featured an application programming interface (API) for external application developers to extend the system. This factor gave Hermes a very familiar feel to most of the popular BBSs that existed on the PC side of the world while providing a Macintosh GUI management interface which was unique for the time in the BBS world. Wayne gave the go ahead which meant that Will was able to use a best of breed text based interface for users while building an easy to use management interface on top of that for Macintosh based Sysops. Early in the development of Hermes, Will Price contacted Wayne Bell the author of WWIV BBS for MS-DOS for permission to use the "look and feel" of WWIV in Hermes without actually using any of the source code. Hermes became very widely used by a large number of Macintosh BBS systems due to several factors including multi-line support and ease of use. Will Price started Hermes while in 10th grade at boarding school and released it the following year. You really should run the very latest version of the software, because it will no doubt have some bug fixes in it, which will be to your advantage. You can telnet to my BBS at static IP address 202.128.4.177. If you are interested in reading about the history of my own Hermes II BBS, please go here:įinally, at the above URL, as well as on my BBS, I have everything you need to get Hermes II up and running properly as a telnet accessible BBS. To assist you in doing this, I just completed writing a very detailed tutorial, which you will find on my Armageddon BBS webpage at the following URL: It was never released publicly as a compiled binary, but you can compile it yourself, even if you have no experience as a programmer. The reason why I am telling you this is because the actual latest release of Hermes II is 3.5.11, which I compiled a few days ago myself, and am now running on my own BBS, the Armageddon BBS. The source code is available on the GitHub website. You should also know that the current owner and most recent developer of Hermes II - Michael Alyn Miller - released the code to Hermes II as open source two years ago in 2013. ![]() They are available on my BBS, and still contain a lot of helpful info. My third suggestion is that you dig into the Hermes II docs. My second suggestion is that you trash everything and start from scratch with a fresh copy of Hermes II. That would be 3.5.10b3, which is available here. I don't know the full details regarding your setup there, but my first suggestion to is that you verify that you are running the very latest publicly released version of the Hermes II BBS software. In order to run Hermes II in Mac Classic mode on this OS X machine, I have successfully installed both the SheepShaver and Basilisk II emulators. I first ran my BBS on an LC III, but have since moved up to an early 2009 iMac running Yosemite. In fact, I just put my BBS back online again for about the third time since 1994, about two weeks ago. For the record, I have run a Hermes II BBS on and off since early 1994. Hello, I don't know if you are still around, or even if you are still interested in setting up a Hermes II BBS, but I may be able to assist you. I have to reboot at that point.Īnyone experience this or have any idea why?Īlso anyone have experience getting this running via Telnet? I have a Nubus ethernet card in the LC. It comes up with a completely empty error box with an OK for a modem driver, then the log window pops up and starts listing errors for missing files in the "Shared" directory, then it just freezes my entire computer up. Restart the installer again, and when it asks for the prefs file, I search through the directories it created, find that file, and it looks like the program is starting. I look, and it created a bunch of directories. So I click new, the HD makes some noise, then the program hangs, but I can still move the mouse, etc. When you start the installer file (I guess is what it is) it comes up with a box asking to find the prefs file, or click New if you're starting a new BBS. Wanted to try and get a telnet hermes BBS running on my Mac LC.ĭownloaded both the 3.5.9 and 3.5.10b, and having the same problem with both.
